German 7x50 fixed focus armored binocular set, « captured grouping »
A pair of German « 7 x 50 » fixed focus armored binocular set with boat storage mount. The set is manufactured by the firm « CARL ZEISS ». They are known to be marked under the rubber lens covering on the right side. Serial numbered « 54499 » and three letter code marked « blc ». This model was specially manufactured for the use aboard submarines but also used on other combat vessels such as E-boats for example. The set is in untouched and in as found condition. The rubber coverings are still somewhat pliable and most importantly original to the set. From natural age and storage conditions the rubber has collected and is cracked but stable. The binoculars themselves retain over 80% of their factory applied smooth tan finish. The set is complete with a field made on-board storage case. Typical German plywood construction and lined with a leather in the interior. Slightly loose and torn but present nonetheless. They originated from a small private sale in the UK. The set is either a war trophy from a surrendering U-boat or E-boat somewhere on the English Coast at war's end. A difficult and very desirable set with some history attached to it.
