M38 Paratrooper Double Decal helmet KIA « OPERATION HANNIBAL »
Description
M1938 Fallschirmjäger double decal helmet. One of two helmets that were just recently found a few weeks ago direct from a house clean-out in Germany from the brothers estate of Jäger Franz Stadelhofer of 1st. Komp Fallsch. Jg. Regt. 2.
Helmet is an « ET68 » with proper lot number of « 3979 » for a double decal configuration. Exterior of the helmet is in very nice condition. It retains over 97% of its apple green factory finish. Both decals are present and are over 90% complete. Small scuffs, and dings from combat use are present. Underneath the Luftwaffe decal a shrapnel entry hole can be seen. No exit hole is present but a bump against the back underneath the left spanner bolt is present. Some paint loose on the damage is evident. The interior of the helmet is as one would expect. Early liner with correct natural rubber padding. All bolts and retaining nuts are present and tightly secured and remained in untouched and undisturbed condition. Chinstraps are the early slit type with two ends being cleanly cut and resign loosely back on. We assume this was done in order for the helmet to be removed from Jäger Stadelhofer. The shrapnel entry area is in good condition but the exit wound area although all present is torn/ripped/and blood stained.
Included with this helmet are the three original photos we were able to obtain from the estate and they will be included with this helmet. We can see the brother visiting the grave.
This operation cost the Fallsch. Jg. Regt 2 64 killed and 16 missing in action. This helmet not only represents the fierceness of the battle but also one of the 64 that were killed that day. Truly a unique piece of World War Two history that can be placed at a specific time and point.
Franz Stadelhofer is buried in the military cemetery in Dionyssos-Rapendoza.
