M40 Luftwaffe « Chunky » camouflage helmet, band attachment, Normandy unit marked
Description
This is a great Luftwaffe combat M40 helmet with a period field applied rubber inner tube attachment for camouflage. The helmet retains over 90% of the thick application of camouflage, wear is present on the dome of the helmet and towards the wearers back. It consists of a concrete sand mixture which is strongly adhered to the helmet and not loose as some others. Period field wear around the rim and certain high spots as you would expect to see, the camouflage paint has cracked over the Luftwaffe decal. The attachment is hand sewn with thick thread which has toned over the years and hard to the touch, nicely formed over the rivets. Helmet is an « Q66 » with a lot number not clearly visible but present. The liner is all present and undisturbed, supple but a little dryness on the back side with some minor cracks. The drawstring is present but untied to keep the liner relaxed and not stressed. Leather chin strap present, marked on the tip with the maker's name, the location and the date « TIWO, HEIDELBERG, 1940 », and in very good condition. The skirt of the helmet is named to the soldier « Euent » and Feldpost Numbered « L32708 », making this a Luftwaffe used helmet. We were able to find the unit and history information provided below.
