Description

Rare German M40 Luftwaffe helmet attributed to the 9th Staffel of Zerstörergeschwader 26 (9./ZG 26).This example stands out for its remarkable hand-painted unit insignia on the right side of the shell, depicting a rooster in a fighting stance. This rooster emblem was carried on Messerschmitt Bf 110D aircraft of 9./ZG 26, notably in Sicily in 1941. Manufactured by Quist and marked « Q66 », indicating a size 66 shell, this helmet bears the lot number « T1353 ». The helmet features a field-applied brush-painted finish, applied by its original wartime wearer. Particular care was taken during this process to preserve the regulation Luftwaffe eagle decal, of which more than 95% remains intact. The most outstanding feature of this piece is undoubtedly its hand-painted Staffel insignia depicting a fighting rooster. The outlines of the design were first carefully engraved into the paint before being meticulously filled in by hand, demonstrating an exceptional level of craftsmanship and attention to detail. The interior remains in very good overall condition. The leather liner retains its original light colour and remains supple, with the original drawstring still present. The brown leather chinstrap is also present and is maker marked and dated « RAHM & KAMPMANN WUPPERTAL 1938 ». This helmet was discovered at a militaria show in the United States and is believed to have been brought back by an American veteran as a war trophy. A particularly interesting collector's piece, both for its attribution to an identified Luftwaffe unit and for its distinctive hand-painted insignia, a feature that gives this helmet considerable historical and aesthetic appeal.
