Rare USM1 2nd Infantry Division Chaplain's combat helmet, « Indian Head »
Description
An exceptional USM1 fixed bale front seam serial numbered 2nd Infantry Division Chaplain's combat helmet. This helmet is from the famous 2nd Infantry Division « INDIAN HEAD ». The helmet remains and is in its original untouched and as-found condition. The helmet shell is in very good shape. Retains over 85% of its secondary green painted finish. One divisional emblem is present along the front. Was first painted on the factory « OD » green finish paint. Secondary coating was added to the helmet at sometime of its service. The emblem remains intact and was nicely painted around. In the detailed photos below you can see the natural age, crazing and improper storage conditions it was exposed when in the elements. Helmet retains its original khaki web chinstraps. They feature the correct early brass hardware and all present. Faintly serial numbered along the straps with a barely visible number. Interior of the shell is painted in black painted with two serial number « 4375 » and in white painted with « Nobbie / S-4375 ». The helmet's liner is a choice untouched example. Manufactured and stamped along the dome by « CAPAC ». Dusty, dirty and stain the liner is what one expects in such a helmet. Nicely retain over 90% of its factory finish. « 2nd Infantry Division » emblem is perfectly hand painted along the front and below followed with a simple white cross. In the detailed photos below you can see crazing and natural toning of the paint. We can also see the contours of a previous emblem painted in the same place. The back retains its period painted vertical « ETO FOLLOW ME STRIPE ». The interior of the liner is untouched. Shows plenty of wear and evidence of true combat. The leather sweatband is nicely worn and stained. Faintly serial numbered along the back adjustable buckle area in a large ink stamped font. Dust, dirty and natural accumulation is present. Back neck rest is absent. Chinstrap is complete and still present on the helmet. Helmet remains one of the nicest and difficult examples to find to one of the most famous Infantry Divisions to serve in the « ETO ». The helmet is worthy of further research. Choice example !
