USAAF Type A-2 Painted Flight Jacket « Pilot Anthony Moretti », ETO / D-DAY/ 70 MISSIONS
Description
This is a superb named, unit/plane marked, and multiple section painted A-2 Jacket belonging to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania local Pilot Anthony Moretti of the 8th AAF. The planes name was the « SWEATIN 2ND » a B-26 Bomber plane with tail number visible on the back of the jacket. Originally part of the multiple units throughout the war including « 322nd BG / 323th / 386th and lastly the 557th Bomb Group 387th/ 397th » of the 8th and 9th AAF. The 323rd was known as the « DUCK DECOY DIVISION ». A well seasoned pilot and something of a unique true rarity. Only a handful of service men reached over 70 missions, the jackets that survived are almost nonexistent - this is the only one we are aware of. Excellent condition body, leather is supple and still strong. No conditions issues, just a small hole on the back of the right arm. Cuffs and knits are original and not replaced. All in good condition with some small repairs on the cuffs and a couple small pull marks on the back of the waist, which is exactly what you want to see on these jackets. One small paint drip of turquoise color on the right shoulder, most likely at some point in this jackets life. The frontal paint is in excellent condition. Leather name tag originally machine sewn to the jacket and still secure with the pilots name embossed. Above « PURPLE HEART » is painted and opposite the name of the plane « SWEATING 2ND » with a row of ducks for the nick name of the division at the time. All in the same darker yellow paint. Former squadron patch was period removed with the outline slightly showing. A total of « 70 » yellow small bombs are painted over that location. Buttons and snaps are fully functional. Zipper by TALON, fully working. The interior is in excellent shape, full cotton brown lining. Contractor tag is present and the jacket is made by « ROUGH WEAR CLOTHING OF MIDDLETOWN, PA. » The jacket is nicely sized at a 40. The back of the jacket features the name of the plane on the top, a nicely detailed B-26 Bomber plane, propellers spinning, flak exploding, tail markings. The names of the important locations and missions are painted all around including the most important « D-DAY » mission that is highly desirable. The jacket was recently acquire from a collection that was stored away for over 35 years. One of the best A-2 Jackets in existence.
