USM1 1st Infantry Division « Nuremberg » war crimes lieutenant's helmet liner
Description
A very rare USM1 1st Infantry Division Lieutenant's helmet liner for the 18th Infantry Regiment. The 18th Infantry Division saw action from landings in Normandy, France on « D-Day » all the way till the end with their duty during the Nazi war crimes tribunal in Nuremberg, Germany. Helmet liner's exterior remains in excellent condition. Features a period « 1st Infantry Division - BIG RED ONE » emblem on the front. Rating in at over 94%. Underneath it retains a period applied lieutenants rank bar from medical tape. On each side of the helmet are present the 18th Infantry's Regimental distinctive unit insignia. Both rate in over 95% and with the motto « IN OMNIA PARATUS - TILL THE LAST ROUND ». The overall surface of the helmet is matte and untouched. Minimal scuffs and scraps mostly from prolonged storage in the US veterans footlocker. The interior is complete and untouched/ undisturbed state. The liner is manufactured by Westinghouse and marked along the dome. The liner system is complete and in matching condition. All the webbings straps are present, light tan in color and show a nice use look. Chinstrap is complete and original to the helmet. No names can be seen. The Nuremberg Trials insignia is a German manufactured example with a desirable screw back version. It is makers marked « L. CHR. LAUER / NÜRNBERG ». Slightly visible is the mention « Internal Security Detachment » etched along the perimeter. The insignia was found directly affixed to the front of the liner originally. The front shows nice patina and age along with the famous scale of justice and the crushed swastika key along the top in blue and red enamel. The18th Infantry Regiment served an important role not only in guarding the defendants but also organization, maintenance and operations of the entire « War Trials » and « Nurnberg Palace of Justice ». This particular helmet set was sourced directly from a veterans estate in North Carolina and remained in the former collection until his death last year. It was purchased directly from our close colleague. A historic artifact to one of the most interesting and troubling times of the 20th Century.
