USM1 fixed bale U.S. Navy Lieutenants combat helmet, « Normandy recovered »
Description
This is a USM1 fixed bale front seam combat helmet. It is ranked for a U.S. Navy Lieutenant in a special way and was originally recovered from Normandy, France in the 1980's. The helmet's exterior retains over 90% of its factory applied rough OD green finish. Matte in feel and shows no handling. It is uniquely ranked along the front to a US Navy Lieutenant not by being painted but by having the factory green paint etched out with precision. This exposed the bare metal underneath giving this helmet a very unique look. The helmet shows oxidation throughout the entire shell. Unfortunately the web chinstraps did not fair as nicely. One web chinstrap is complete with early brass hardware and shows verdigris on the brass. The female side is absent with only a small section remaining. Rust and oxidation are present in the interior. The helmet was original recovered from the Normandy Region by an East Coast US collector in the 1980's personally and remained in his collection until his death a few years ago. A unique and desirable true « D-Day » relic that would make a great addition to any US or headgear collector. Choice.
