USM1 fixed bale US Navy landing craft driver's combat helmet, « Normandy recovered »
Description
A very nice USM1 U.S. Navy landing craft driver's or crew helmet. The helmet is a fixed bale front seam helmet with a lot number of « 152A ». The web chin straps are original, retain their early brass hardware and have been re-attached at some point in the past. The helmet's exterior features its original factory finish that shows nice use with a good amount of wear and oxidation present. The helmet has a carefully white painted band all round. This type of band would signify a driver, operator or crew of a landing craft. These craft show extensive use in the Normandy campaign from the very first waves of the invasion. The helmet is complete with a helmet liner manufactured by « WESTINGHOUSE ». The paint rates at 95%. The liner is faintly named and serial numbers but unreadable. Also etched into the helmet is the name « FELIX ». The leather chinstrap is absent. Overall a scarce and desirable example that would have been typical of the first invasion waves on D-Day !
