USM1 helmet, 101st AB, 501st Infantry Regiment named helmet, « KIA - Normandy »

Description
A superb and rare USM1 combat helmet of the 101st Airborne Division - 501st Infantry Regiment. The helmet is a front seam fixed bale example. The helmet's exterior is in untouched condition. It retains over 70% of its paint to include the desirable white painted unit marking of the 501st Infantry Regiment. The « DIAMOND » is painted on both sides of the helmet with a « tick » positioned at 9 o'clock corresponding to the « 3rd Battalion ». In the detailed photos below ageing and natural toning over the decades can be observed. The helmet was sourced out of the Carentan area in Normandy, France more than 25 years ago and has never been touched and cleaned. It was probably kept in a barn with partial exposure to the elements until its discovery. The helmet retains its factory applied web chin straps with early brass hardware. The chinstrap is marked to the former owner « CHERNEY ». Identified now to Sgt. Joseph A. Cherny of Armstrong County, Pennsylvania. Sgt. Cherney is « KIA » - On June 6, he jumped in Normandy and will be killed in Action on June 12th « 1944 » at the age of 21 years old. The location of his death is listed near « Sainte Mère-Eglise, FRANCE ». One of the few handful known and original named examples. Overall an exceptional and untouched helmet shell to one of the most famous divisions of the Second World War. It is a museum piece.
