USM1 Helmet Liner, « USAAF - Brest »

Outstanding USM1 helmet liner attributed to the US Air Force, recovered in the Brest region, France. The liner features the distinctive silver-painted exterior commonly associated with American air units during the WWII. The front is adorned with a remarkable decal depicting a blue fox armed with a machine gun, executed in the unmistakable cartoon style characteristic of wartime nose art and the personalized insignia created by American aircrews during the conflict. The liner remains in very good overall condition and is a « Westinghouse » production. The interior is complete, with the exception of the missing leather chinstrap. Helmet liners were frequently personalized by American servicemen, particularly within the air force formations. Decorated examples are today especially sought after, even more so when accompanied by a clear battlefield provenance. An authentic battlefield relic, discovered in Brest, a major center of American presence during the Liberation and Allied logistical operations in Brittany. A superb testimony to the presence of the US Air Force in France in 1944, combining military history with the unique folk art of wartime American servicemen.
