USM1 Military Police combat helmet, « 76th Infantry Division »
Description
An untouched USM1 fixed bale from seam Military Police « MP » combat helmet of the 76th Infantry Division « LIBERTY BELL DIVISION ». Helmet was recently found out of the woodwork in central Germany. The helmet's exterior remains in its natural condition. Factory applied green paint is present and covers over 85% of the shell. Normal amount of scuffs and scraps but also including oxidation is present. The helmet was originally painted with the rank of a Technician 5th Grade « T5 ». Later the helmet was adopted for MP use with the addition of the standard large « MP » initials along the front. The helmet's perimeter painted band consists of first a solid yellow band then followed with a secondary layer of red and blue over the base yellow. All outlined with a solid white thin line along the bottom. The front still retains the « 76th Infantry Division » emblem. The helmet retains both set of factory applied khaki colored chinstraps. Hardware is the early brass type with the female hardware is absent. The 76th Infantry Division started its service in the « ETO » in December 1944. Participating in the fighting in Ardennes-Alsace, Rhineland and Central Europe. One platoon of Military Police was in the Division. The helmet has the initials «WM » carved along the top making for a possible identification. Overall a rare « MP » helmet to a small and limited unit that saw combat in some of the harder campaigns in the « ETO ». Scarce and desirable example.
