Waffen-SS Das Reich grave marker of SS-Rottenführer « Friedrich Kleider »

Superb and very rare original Waffen-SS grave marker. Friedrich Kleider is now buried in the German cemetery of Huisnes-sur-Mer in the department of Manche, Normandy, France. This grave marker was recovered with others in the 80’s in a building near the place where these soldiers had been provisionally buried. Made from solid thick and heavy wood. Produced in mass at the time and placed on each of the fallen soldiers graves. This is a rare example being for a member of the « Das Reich » division. The grave marker retains the rank, name, unit and day of birth and death « SS-Rottf. Friedrich Kleider / 1./SS-Pz. Pi. Bel. ‘’DR’’ / 1.4.23 / 13.8.44 ». All painted on a black background « Baltic Cross » in white paint. The number « 21 » on the stake is to signify his location on the graveyard. Overall period wear with minor paint loss, age and crazing. Dimensions: 45x110cm. Further research could easily be undertaken to find more information about this soldier killed in Normandy. The collector visited his grave in the 1990s; a photo file comes with the cross. A piece that is the truly a reminder of the war.
