WWII German Glider Balkan Cross Section
Description
WWII German glider balkan cross section. The Luftwaffe employed gliders for assault and supply during World War II, more so than the other countries involved in the war since gliders had the sole ability of airborne insertion and silent assaults which could deliver sections of troops at a time. Later these gliders, and more advanced designs, were used to deliver cargo as well as evacuate those wounded as the Germans began losing the war. Measuring roughy 80cm by 60cm. This piece was found in the Midwest, USA from a collection that was liquidated. Made out of the typical reddish canvas material with some main fuselage mounting pieces clearly visible along the back. Some fold marks are present but will nicely even out with proper framing. There is also a small hole from shrapnel damage visible. For camouflage purpose these gliders were painted green on their upper section not to be observed when on the ground, and a sky blue underside to be difficult to detect when in the air. This particular example is for an assault glider and the base background paint is green. The Balkan cross on this section is nicely hand painted in white and black paint. The brush strokes on the cross can be observed in the close up photos. These pieces were highly prized by the US Troops and would make for a great display piece !
